Contact Other Organizations

Congratulations! You have changed your name on your state and federal documents. We are now ready to contact other companies and organizations to change your name with them too.

Back when you were filling out documents, we recommended gathering the list of companies and organizations you need to change your name with. Below is a list of common companies and organizations you may need to notify.
  • Employers
  • Colleges / Universities
  • Banks / credit card companies
  • Mortgage company / landlord
  • Utility / power companies
  • Phone company
  • US Postal Service
  • Any other companies or providers you have an account with
If you generated name change letters earlier in the process you can pull them out now. We are going to send these to the companies and organizations you chose during this step.

Process Steps

There are several ways you can update your name with most companies and organizations.
  • Update your name on their website while logged in - many service providers will let you do this, but banks, mortgage companies, and other financial institutions will likely not
  • Update your name by calling them and talking to a representative
  • Send a formal name change request letter to them along with proof of your name change
Our recommendation for dealing with most organizations or companies is to try to change your name online with them first. Login to their website, go to your profile, and see if you can change your name from there. If you can that is the easiest way to do it!

If that does not work try calling their customer service phone number next. If a representative can change your name, they will let you know what you need to do so. You may need to send proof of your name change to them even if they are able to update it. Usually a copy of your signed name change court order will work.

If the above two options do not work you may need to send your formal name change letter to them. If you end up having to do this you will want to include a copy of your signed name change court order as proof. If you need to go back and use our name change letter interview you can do that here.

If you follow this process with all of the companies and organizations on your list, you will get through this last step. We promise.
